The media in any country is a mirror of the nation, reflecting its state of affairs. The media's job is to identify problems and provide suggestions for solving them in a better way.
If we talk about Pakistani media, be it traditional media or
digital platforms, the changing situation is taking the media away from its
objectives day by day. The biggest reason for the media's misery in Pakistan is
the big earthly gods present here who own the media. The sad thing is that
media houses in Pakistan have become bases for converting black money into
white money.
Where there is talk of political parties day and night and
there are very few channels that draw attention to the real issues, if we talk
about the ranking of Pakistani media in the world, we come at number 158 out of
180 countries in the world. This is the plight of the media because the
journalists here are not allowed to do their job. Those who keep changing
themselves like chameleons according to the system remain in control of this
system and take full advantage of this system because those who have it know
better who to give protocol to and to what extent.
As I have presented the facts about Pakistan in the World
Press Freedom Index 2025, such facts and data are collected by organizations
like this on the basis of how many journalists lost their jobs due to various
pressures, how many people faced severe pressure, etc. But in Pakistan, you are
well aware of this and I am also aware that often such incidents happen to
journalists that they do not even report them and silently tolerate them. If
seen in this context, I think Pakistan's ranking would be even worse.
Now, in all these situations, Pakistani journalists have
some options in which independent journalism is almost impossible and those who
are doing it in this stifling environment are saluted with both hands. Our
country's journalism gives a middle-class journalist a few options, one of
which is that you join a media outfit to regularly represent a party.
The second is that you support those who are the main axis
of this politics, journalism, judiciary and trade, I am sure you are
understanding my point properly and the third option is that you starve to
death, go door to door to media houses, keep a good printer of your own and
keep copying your CV on it and keep wandering from door to door.
Along with this, a fourth option is also very great, which is
to open your own independent journalism shop and if luck and your hard work
support you, then great, otherwise you will get a thousand or two thousand
views and say bad things about journalism. Nowadays, if you look at it, most
young journalists are moving towards this last option and are flouting morality
in the pursuit of views. They do not know that if someone in front of them is a
victim of abuse, what is going on with them. This young journalist sees views
and dollars in the sighs and sobs of this victim. To them, our mainstream media
has also lost its hand in the pursuit of dollars and such thumbnails are put
up, God forbid.
Now all these situations have created a stir in journalism
and as a student of journalism, I salute all my senior journalists who, despite
all these situations, have maintained the knowledge of freedom of the press and
have saved their lives from this dust and dust. They are doing journalism
honestly in this country of Pakistan. In all these situations, they try to
always stand with the oppressed and tell the oppressor that you have done
injustice, even if cases are filed against them, the sanctity of their chador
and four walls is violated, they are removed from channels, YouTube channels
are blocked or their accounts and identity cards are closed.
