Government decides to divide Islamabad into 3 town corporations

The Federal government has decided to divide Islamabad into 3 town corporations. Under the new local government system, Islamabad will have 3 mayors and 6 deputy mayors.

On Monday, the federal government decided to make a major change in the local government system in Islamabad and completed preparations to divide the federal capital into 3 town corporations, under which a separate mayor and deputy mayors will be appointed in each town.

According to sources, under the new local government system, Islamabad will have 3 mayors and 6 deputy mayors, while approval has been given to form the local government system in Islamabad on the Punjab model, while one mayor and 2 deputy mayors will be appointed in each town corporation.

Sources say that the mayor and deputy mayors will not be elected directly by the people, but the chairman of the union council will indirectly elect the mayor and deputy mayors. Under this decision, preparations are being made to abolish the current metropolitan corporation system in Islamabad.

According to sources, the federal cabinet has approved the local government amendments, while a presidential ordinance is likely to be issued in this regard. Under the proposed plan, Islamabad has been proposed to be divided into 3 towns based on the 3 constituencies of the National Assembly.

According to sources, it is also proposed to give administrative and financial autonomy to town corporations, while several powers of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) will be transferred to town corporations in a phased manner.

Sources say that under the new system, mayors will have powers related to sanitation, drainage and development projects, while it is being claimed to make administrative matters more effective at the local government level.
