Federal cabinet approves postponement of Islamabad local government elections again


 

A short meeting of the Federal Cabinet was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in which the decisions of the Cabinet Committee on Legislation held on December 3 and December 30 were ratified.

According to sources of The INQUIRER, the cabinet meeting considered new legislation related to local government elections in the federal capital, in which the Chief Commissioner Islamabad also gave a briefing to the federal cabinet regarding the local government elections. The federal cabinet approved the postponement of the local government elections again.

Sources say that the cabinet has also approved the legislation for Punjab-style local government elections in Islamabad. While the Election Commission had set February 15 as the date for the Islamabad local government elections, while the results were to be compiled from February 16 to February 19.

Talking to the cabinet members in the meeting, the Prime Minister congratulated the members of the federal cabinet on the New Year and expressed his best wishes. The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction that the privatization of 75 percent of PIA shares was very successful and the bidding process was very transparent.

The Prime Minister said that we had decided upon coming to power that loss-making state-owned enterprises would be privatized. The privatization of PIA is a very important milestone in this regard. The privatization of loss-making state-owned enterprises is part of the government’s vision for economic reforms.

He said that the significant increase in the country’s GDP in the first quarter of the current fiscal year is welcome. We have brought the country from the brink of default to economic stability.

The Prime Minister, while mentioning his recent meetings with the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, described them as very useful in the context of bilateral relations and mutual consultations.

He added that a day ago he had a pleasant telephone conversation with the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in which satisfaction was expressed on the pace of economic and strategic relations between the two countries. Discussions were also held regarding further expanding the relations.

The Federal Cabinet has ratified the decisions taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases on December 30, 2025, including the ratification of the action taken in relation to the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance 2025, and the decisions taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases on December 3, 2025.

The Federal Cabinet has ratified the decisions taken in the meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee on August 26, 2025, including the ratification of the decision to provide relief to the consumers of electricity distribution companies with regard to off-grid (captive power plant) levy and to formulate a strategy in this regard.

The Federal Cabinet, on the recommendation of the Petroleum Division, has approved the issuance of a Presidential Order amending the Off-Grid (Captive Power Plants) Levy Act 2025 with regard to the sale of gas to off-grid captive power plants by a third party.
