Karachi Gul Plaza fire: Fire could not be controlled, death toll feared to rise


 

The fire that broke out in Gul Plaza on MA Jinnah Road in Shahr-e-Quaid is still out of control. Six people, including a firefighter, have died. The fire could not be brought under control.

According to sources, more than 30 people are injured, of whom 11 are said to be in critical condition. The fire caused cracks in the building, two parts collapsed, while the entire building is feared to collapse. Rescue 1122 Sindh says that 77 percent of the fire has been brought under control.

The deceased in the third-degree fire in Gul Plaza have been identified as 40-year-old Kashif, 55-year-old Faraz, 30-year-old Amir, 28-year-old Amir and an unknown person. Eleven of the dozens injured are in critical condition. The martyred firefighter was identified as Furqan Ali.

The building has been badly damaged due to the fire, the pillars have been weakened, several parts of the building have collapsed, including the rear part, and there is a fear that the entire building will collapse due to the building being very old and dilapidated.

The building housed shops selling clothes, crockery, perfume, makeup, electronics, toys, and more. There were more than 1,200 shops in the three-storey building. The ground and mezzanine floors have been completely burnt down by the fire, and the upper two floors are also on fire.

Due to the lack of ventilation and the closed windows, the building was filled with smoke. The operation was difficult due to heavy smoke, lack of emergency exits, and lack of water. Vehicles also had difficulty reaching Gul Plaza late at night due to the crowd of people in front of it.

Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto expressed grief over the loss of life and property due to the fire and directed the sindh Chief minister and Karachi Mayor to use all resources to extinguish the fire.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and directed for an immediate investigation into the incident and prevention of such incidents in the future.
