Work pressure makes people gay, Malaysian minister’s unique logic

A statement by Malaysia’s Minister of Religious Affairs, Dr. Zulkifli Hassan, has sparked a fierce controversy in the country, in which he claimed that work pressure, social influences, and lack of religious practice are factors that lead people to homosexuality.

According to a report by the Chinese news agency ‘South China Morning Post’, Dr. Zulkifli Hassan made the statement in a written reply submitted to Parliament in response to a question from Siti Zaila Mohamed Yusof, a member of Parliament from the opposition Islamic party PAS, regarding the increasing trend of homosexuality.

The question asked by the opposition leader sought information on age, ethnicity, and possible causes.

In his response, the Malaysian minister said that social influences, work pressure, and other personal factors are among the reasons he considers the basis of homosexuality.

Dr. Zulkifli Hassan said that a total of 135 cases of immoral activities were recorded in the form of arrests or court proceedings between 2022 and 2025.

Minister Zulkifli Hassan’s statement was followed by a strong reaction on social media, where several Malaysian citizens ridiculed the claim.
