In India, a
brother dug up his sister's skeleton from the grave and reached the bank to
provide proof of her death for just Rs 19,300, videos of which went viral on
social media, after which the incident gained public attention.
According to
Indian media reports, the incident took place on April 27 at the Maliposi
branch of the Odisha Gramin Bank in Keonjhar district of the Indian state of
Odisha, where 50-year-old Jeetu Munda was carrying his sister's skeleton on his
shoulder.
According to
reports, Jeetu Munda's 56-year-old sister Kalra Munda died on January 26. She
had returned to her ancestral home after the deaths of her husband and son, and
Jeetu was her only living relative. She had opened an account in a local bank,
into which she regularly deposited money.
Reports say
that after the death of his sister, the family performed her last rites and
buried her near the house. Later, Jeetu Munda tried to withdraw Rs 20,000 from
the bank, to which the bank manager bluntly told him to either bring the
account holder or provide a death certificate and proof of legal inheritance.
Jeetu had
neither documents nor any knowledge of any procedure to prepare the papers. He
informed the bank officials about his sister’s death several times, but they
did not listen to him.
Due to this
frustration, Jeetu went to the village and dug his sister’s grave, took out her
remains, wrapped them in a cloth and carried them on his shoulder and reached
the bank 3 km away to provide evidence. After which, there was a commotion in
the bank administration.
On receiving
information about the incident, the police reached the spot and brought the
situation under control and advised Jeetu Munda to obtain a legal inheritance
certificate from the tehsil office so that the money could be withdrawn. The
police later reburied the human remains.
According to
the police, Jeetu Munda is illiterate and did not understand the legal process,
while the bank officials did not provide proper guidance.
The district
administration has taken notice of the incident and sought a report and
directed the bank to release the money immediately after the legal process is
completed. The matter is being discussed on social media after the videos of
the incident surfaced.
