New York: Fierce
words have been exchanged between the United States and Iran at the United
Nations nuclear weapons conference.
The US and
Iran have been at loggerheads over Tehran's nuclear programme since the start
of the review meeting of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, a dispute that is likely
to continue throughout the four-week meeting.
The main
reason for the dispute is Iran's choice of one of the conference's 34
vice-chairs, nominated by the Non-Aligned Movement, which includes 121
countries, mostly developing countries.
The US was
supported by Australia and the United Arab Emirates, while Britain, France, and
Germany also expressed concern, and Russia opposed targeting Iran. The US
representative said the Trump administration was surprised that a country that
has been showing disrespect for the treaty has now been made the vice-chair of
the conference.
Iran's
ambassador to the UN in Vienna, Reza Najafi, strongly rejected the US
statement, calling the allegations baseless and politically motivated.
