International
Workers' Day is being celebrated to highlight the sacrifices of workers and
their rights around the world, including in Pakistan.
Even on the day celebrated for workers, the worker continues
to work for the bread of his children, unaware of the importance of this day.
What is Labor Day?
On May 1, 1886, the workers of the American city of Chicago
took to the streets to protest against the exploitation of capitalists and
industrialists, but the police opened fire on the procession, killing and
injuring hundreds of workers, while dozens were hanged for raising their voices
for their rights.
To express solidarity with the workers of Chicago,
International Workers' Day is celebrated on May 1 in most countries of the
world. This day is celebrated every year on May 1 with a pledge to intensify
efforts to change the economic conditions of workers.
In Pakistan, the celebration of Labor Day at the national
level began in 1973 during the reign of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. On this day,
events, seminars, conferences and rallies are organized in all small and big
cities across the country.
The plight of workers in Pakistan
Labor leaders say that millions of workers working in the
private sector still do not have access to health facilities and social
security, and the government's announcement of a minimum wage is not being
implemented.
They demand that legislation in the interests of workers
cannot be enacted without representation of workers in the national and
provincial assemblies, including the Senate, and that all political parties
must allocate seats reserved for workers.
