Islamabad: Oil
and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has achieved a major scientific
breakthrough for the first time in Pakistan by confirming the presence of
lithium in groundwater, the amount of which is said to be equal to the world's
leading lithium-bearing geothermal brines.
The
discovery came during advanced geochemical analysis of formation water obtained
from a successfully tested high-temperature geothermal well under OGDC's pilot
geothermal program.
Senior OGDC
officials said that this is the first discovery of its kind in Pakistan; after
this discovery, Pakistan has joined the ranks of countries that are exploring
geothermal brine as a potential source of lithium.
Lithium is a
key mineral that has become fundamental in the global transition to clean
energy; it is an essential component of electric vehicle batteries, large-scale
energy storage systems, and several advanced technologies.
