New rules have been issued to ensure healthy food for
children in schools in Abu Dhabi. The Department of Education and Knowledge has
published a list of foods and drinks prohibited in schools.
According to the rules, school lunch boxes should not
contain sugary drinks, foods high in fat or sugar, processed foods, artificial
additives, and some dairy and soy products.
Sugary drinks, syrupy juices, soft drinks, energy or sports
drinks (except for certain isotonic drinks), highly sweetened foods: candy,
chocolate (except dark chocolate), marshmallows, lollipops, ice cream, flavored
or sweetened milk and yogurt will be banned.
Fried chicken, chicken nuggets, falafel, samosas, potato or
corn snacks, processed meats, pickles. Foods with artificial colors, flavors or
chemicals, certain food additives, ready-made sauces such as ketchup or ranch,
etc. will also not be used.
In addition, pork or its derivatives, alcoholic beverages,
hydrogenated fats, honey for children under 12 months, unpasteurized food,
soybean products, nuts, and foods that are dangerous for children to chew or
swallow, have also been banned. Violators will face legal action and fines.
