Rawalpindi: Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission
(SPARCO) has successfully crossed another important milestone in Pakistan’s
human spaceflight program.
The ISPR informed that SPARCO has successfully completed the
second phase of selection of astronaut candidates. After initial screening in
Pakistan, two candidates have been shortlisted, who completed comprehensive
medical, psychological and fitness assessments as per international human
spaceflight standards at the Astronaut Center (ACC) in China.
The shortlisted candidates will undergo advanced astronaut
training at the Astronaut Center in China for six months. After completion of
the training, one candidate will be selected for a space mission to the Chinese
Space Station in October/November 2026.
The cooperation between Pakistan and China is taking place
under the Bilateral Astronaut Cooperation Agreement signed in February 2025,
which was concluded under the leadership of the Prime Minister of Pakistan,
whose vision and cooperation made Pakistan’s participation in human spaceflight
possible.
This historic initiative also reflects the strong support of
the Government of the People’s Republic of China, which has selected Pakistan
as the first foreign partner in its astronaut program.
