Tehran: The Assembly of Experts has agreed on a new leader
to elect a new Supreme Leader in Iran.
Assembly of Experts member Mohammad Mir Baqir has said that
most members have agreed on the election of a new Supreme Leader, but some
process-related obstacles still remain that must be resolved.
According to Arab media, the majority of members of the Assembly
of Experts agree on electing Mojtaba Khamenei as the Supreme Leader. The
consensus of the members reflects the will of the people and the continuity of
the behavior of the martyred Supreme Leader.
The media report said that some members have different
opinions, but the disagreement is sincere, there are no political objectives,
and the delay in the official announcement of the Supreme Leader is due to
security concerns.
According to foreign media, another senior member of the
assembly had said on Saturday that the members would meet within a day to elect
a new Supreme Leader.
According to Iranian media, there is a slight disagreement
among the members on whether the final decision should be made after a regular
in-person meeting or, in the current circumstances, be announced without this
formal process.
Ayatollah Mohsen Heydari, a member of the Assembly of
Experts, said that a direct session of the Assembly for the final vote is not
possible under the current circumstances.
He added that a candidate has been selected who is in line with the late Supreme Leader’s directive that Iran’s supreme leader should be someone the enemy dislikes, not admires.
