ISLAMABAD:
President Asif Ali Zardari, in his message on the occasion of Earth Hour, has
appealed to the public to turn off the lights for one hour and said that
collective measures are indispensable to protect the environment.
The President said that Give an Hour for Earth invites
people to reflect on their lifestyles, while the symbolic one-hour shutdown is
an incentive for practical environmental actions. He said that Pakistan is
among the countries severely affected by climate change, and that the recent
floods, heat waves, and droughts are major challenges.
He added that farmers are facing uncertainty due to changing
weather patterns, while rising temperatures in cities are putting pressure on
the power system. President Zardari said that infrastructure is being affected
by reduced water availability and floods. Pakistan’s share in global emissions
is less than one percent, but the risks are high.
Pakistan is committed to implementing the goals of the Paris
Agreement and work is underway to transition to clean energy. He said that the
Green Pakistan Program is increasing forest cover and creating employment
opportunities.
