Washington: Former US Secretary of Defense and former CIA Director Leon Panetta has said that President Donald Trump is stuck in a deadlock after three weeks of war with Iran.
In an interview with a British newspaper, Leon Panetta
sharply criticized Trump’s war strategy, saying that Trump is relying on
“imaginary thinking” instead of solid planning. According to him, Trump
believes that his statements will automatically become reality, which is a
frivolous attitude.
He said that the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
proved to be a big mistake because it brought out a more hard-line leadership
rather than a popular uprising.
Leon Panetta expressed surprise that the US administration
did not prepare in advance for the possibility of Iran closing the Strait of
Hormuz, although this threat was always discussed in national security meetings
and could cause a global oil crisis.
According to him, Trump is currently in a situation where a
ceasefire is not possible due to Iran's control of the Strait of Hormuz and the
US is now left with the only option to target Iranian coastal defense systems
and provide passage for oil tankers itself, even though this would increase the
intensity of the war and the risk of casualties.
Leon Panetta also criticized the current US Secretary of
Defense, Pat Hegseth, calling him a mere supporter of the president rather than
an effective Secretary of Defense. He also accused the Trump administration of
using war videos and the transfer of the bodies of dead soldiers for publicity
purposes and fundraising.
Leon Panetta said Trump's failure to apologize for the US
attack on a girls' school in Iran has further strengthened the negative
perception of the US globally.
