Don't open 'lockdown notices' on WhatsApp, experts warn

New York: In the context of the Iran war, measures such as energy crises and smart lockdowns are being considered around the world. Taking advantage of this situation, cybercriminal elements have also become active.

Hackers have also become active in taking advantage of this situation and are sending a dangerous virus in the name of “Lockdown Notice”, which can empty your bank account with a single click.

In the Indian city of Hyderabad, a dangerous file called “War Lockdown Notice” is going viral on social media platforms, especially WhatsApp, these days. It may seem like a joke, but according to cyber experts, it is a serious threat.

According to experts, this is a systematic social engineering strategy through which hackers attempt to access users’ mobile and personal information. This PDF file may contain secret JavaScript code, which can exploit the vulnerabilities of your phone or computer behind the scenes and hack it as soon as you open the file.

Apart from this, hackers can also track the user's IP address and location through the file's metadata, not only this, but an APK file is also being sent with this message, which, once installed, gives hackers complete control of your phone.

Through this, not only can your camera and mic be turned on without permission, but also bank OTPs can be stolen, as a result of which your bank account can be empty in a few minutes, in addition to this, all your passwords and PIN codes can also be recorded through keylogging.

Experts have strongly advised the public not to click on or download any PDF or APK file received from any unknown number.

To avoid this situation, go to your mobile settings and turn off the “Install unknown apps” option, and if you receive any such file, delete it immediately. In any suspicious situation, it is important to scan your phone with a security app.
