Washington: World football organization FIFA has rejected
Iran’s request to move the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches from the United States
to another country, after which Iran’s participation has once again become a
question mark.
According to a foreign news agency, Mexican President
Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that FIFA has rejected Iran’s request to move
its World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico, citing logistical
obstacles.
According to the news agency, Iran had demanded that its
group matches be moved to Mexico instead of the United States due to the
ongoing war between the United States and Israel and security concerns,
however, FIFA has clarified that there will be no changes to the tournament
schedule and the matches will be held at the previously scheduled venues.
Mexican President Sheinbaum reiterated FIFA’s position on
Friday, saying that the matches will be played in the United States as planned.
