Smart glasses available for rent to cheat in exams

Beijing: While technology is making human life easier, its negative use has emerged as a new challenge for the education system.

In China, students are increasingly renting ‘smart glasses’ (glasses with hidden cameras) to cheat on exams. A report has revealed that Chinese students are renting these smart devices at low prices to cheat on exams so that they can pass without getting caught.

The advent of AI has brought about a major development in the smart glasses industry. These devices are used to take photos, record videos, analyze the world around them, translate road signs, find directions, and read scripts during presentations. However, due to their high cost, people in China are renting these glasses from cheap marketplaces instead of buying them.

According to reports, traders are active at China’s famous second-hand market ‘Xianyu’ are providing these modern glasses on rent for just 40 to 80 yuan (approximately 1,500 to 3,000 Pakistani rupees) per day.

A trader from Shenzhen claims that he has provided these devices to more than 1,000 students in just four months.

These smart glasses are used especially in English and mathematics exams. They have cameras, audio features and modern technology, which provide students with answers immediately after seeing the exam questions. Students scan the questionnaire through these glasses, after which the AI system immediately displays the answers to difficult subjects like English and mathematics on a small screen inside the glasses.

These smart glasses look like normal glasses, but they have hidden cameras, audio systems and advanced models of artificial intelligence. The design of these devices is so simple and traditional that it becomes difficult for the examination staff to recognize whether the student is wearing normal glasses or a spy device.

Interestingly, on the one hand, these devices are being misused, on the other hand, the Chinese government is promoting the sale of local brands like ‘Rokud’ and ‘Quark’ through its national subsidy scheme. Along with Meta, big names like Xiaomi and Alibaba have also introduced their smart glasses in the market.

Education experts say that now is the time to change the methods of examinations, otherwise, ‘technology copying will replace hard work. Now it remains to be seen what strategy Chinese educational institutions adopt to deal with this ‘digital copying’.
