Lithuania: A battery has been introduced that is claimed to last more than a century.
According to a report by the website Interesting
Engineering, an American company that makes nuclear materials has created a
‘solid-state’ battery that it claims can provide continuous power for more than
a century without any maintenance.
The battery is specially designed for electronic devices
that use very little power and are installed in places where frequent visits or
repairs are difficult.
According to a company called NRD, its NBV series batteries
use a substance called (Nickel-63), which generates electricity through the
emission of radiation. This technology is called a ‘beta voltaic’ design that
converts the energy emitted from radiation directly into an electric current.
Unlike ordinary batteries, these batteries continue to provide electricity
continuously for decades.
According to the report, this small battery can provide
power from 5 to 500 nanowatts, which is so low that it is suitable only for
special types of sensors, data recording systems and monitoring devices that
require constant but modest energy.
The company's CEO, Shell Alfaro, said that if the battery
fails during a critical mission, the entire system fails. Our battery is the
best solution for places where it is not possible to replace the battery.
This battery can be used for industrial monitoring,
environmental sensors, security systems and artificial intelligence platforms
that require a small amount of power to stay on at all times.
The company has decades of experience using nuclear
materials, but the CEO has not yet clarified when these batteries will be
available in the general market, although the 100-year claim is based on the
physical age of (Nickel-63) but its actual performance has yet to be
independently tested.
