Washington:
While most of the attention around the world is focused on electric vehicles,
students at Brigham Young University in the US state of Utah have developed an
extraordinary car.
The
car developed by the students is capable of covering a distance of 2,145 miles
on just one gallon (3.8 liters) of fuel. This car, called ‘Super Mileage’, has
an extremely light, compact and aerodynamic design.
The
car weighs only 49 kilograms and is made of carbon fiber. It has a fuel tank of
just 30 milliliters, which is slightly larger than a test tube and needs to be
refilled after only 20 miles of travel.
The Super Mileage is designed for
the annual Shell Eco-Marathon competition, where participants attempt to cover
the greatest distance using the least amount of fuel. The car has stripped away
all the modern conveniences of conventional vehicles, even limiting the
driver's height and weight to a maximum of 163 cm (5.4 ft) and 54 kg (119 lb).
The automakers have calculated that
it would be possible to travel from Utah to New York on just one gallon of
fuel, but the journey would be extremely difficult because the vehicle's top
speed is only 37 km/h and its tank is very small, requiring refueling every 20
miles.
It is important to note that the
Super Mileage is not intended for commercial use, but rather an experimental
vehicle that demonstrates that fossil-fuel vehicles can be very efficient in
certain conditions.
