The sudden fire at the Lak Pass Customs Warehouse in Quetta has
revived a case that was already raising many questions.
According to sources, during the tenure of former Collector Karam
Elahi, it was revealed that seized goods worth billions of rupees had allegedly
disappeared from the Lak Pass Customs Warehouse, but now, after a sudden fire
broke out in the same warehouse, doubts have increased further.
Informed sources say that valuable and foreign goods seized during
various operations were kept in the same warehouse, which is said to be worth
billions of rupees. In the past, too, many questions had arisen regarding the
records, presence and monitoring of these goods, while reports of alleged
irregularities also worried the concerned circles.
Now, after the recent fire, these concerns have intensified, as
this incident is an attempt to destroy possible records or evidence.
According to sources, the real cause of the fire has not yet been
clarified while no detailed position has been immediately revealed by the
concerned authorities. Public and business circles have demanded a transparent
and impartial investigation into the incident, saying that a complete forensic
audit of the goods, records and security system in the warehouse should be
conducted so that the real facts can be brought before the nation.
On the other hand, observers say that if a timely and impartial investigation into the matter is not conducted, not only will the reputation of the Customs Department be further affected but serious questions will also arise regarding the potential loss to the national exchequer. Public circles want to know how such negligence occurred in monitoring the seized goods worth billions of rupees and if the goods really went missing, what action will be taken against the responsible elements.
