Lahore: PEMRA sent a notice to Geo News for showing unacceptable religious imagery in the program Safar Ishq on 10th Muharram, suspending Geo News' license for 15 days and ordering it to stop broadcasting.
According to PEMRA, unacceptable religious imagery was
depicted in Geo News’ program Safar Ishq on 10th Muharram. Such imagery is
against religious, social and cultural values and principles.
PEMRA’s Complaints Council will conduct further hearings and
make recommendations for regulatory action. It remains to be seen what were the
reasons are for such an incident.
Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar has said in his
response that we need to be very careful about religion, we should not go
towards imaginary imagery, the matter will reach its logical conclusion, the
facts will be brought to light.
On the other hand, Geo News administration has admitted its
mistake regarding the content broadcast on 10th Muharram and said that the
content broadcast in the program Safar Ishq reflected the rituals adopted by a
limited number of people in Iraq and some Middle Eastern countries.
Geo News further states that the content was not intended to
represent, endorse or promote any religious viewpoint. The relevant content was
immediately removed and action has been taken against those involved. Geo News
apologizes for this mistake.
