Beijing:
While the use of air conditioners is becoming common due to rising heat and
heat waves around the world, China has introduced a unique and relatively
low-cost method to keep densely populated cities cool, which has also gained
attention on social media.
A
special cooling system has been installed on the roofs of high-rise residential
buildings in Yuncheng, a city in China's northern province of Shaanxi, which is
called Rooftop Rain.
Under
this system, high-pressure nozzles installed on the roofs of buildings emit a
very fine spray of water into the air. These fine droplets help reduce the
temperature of the surrounding environment by about 8 degrees Celsius.
This
system works on the principle of evaporative cooling. Just as sweat from the
body evaporates and cools the body, fine droplets of water absorb heat from the
hot air and turn into steam, which makes the environment around the building
relatively cool.
According
to the administration, this system is operated only during extremely hot days
so that the water droplets evaporate in the air instead of reaching the ground
and people passing below are not affected.
After
videos of this unique cooling system went viral on social media, users from
different countries including Europe and America are expressing surprise at it.
Many people say that if this method is effective and low-cost, it should also
be adopted in other hot regions of the world.
