Islamabad:
An AI-based sign language interpreter system has been introduced in Pakistan
for the hearing impaired.
AI
interpreter is part of the Sanu project, which has been developed by Pakistani
company Connect Hear in collaboration with Ufone. This system is specially
designed to convey important information to deaf and hard-of-hearing people in
Pakistani Sign Language.
The
main objective of this technology is to present common speech or important
announcements in sign language in an understandable manner. With the help of
AI, information can be transferred in a format that can be easily understood by
the hearing impaired.
Snow
was initially planned to be used for natural disasters and emergencies, to
provide immediate warnings to deaf people in the event of floods, earthquakes
or other emergencies.
This
plan is important because emergency announcements are usually made by voice,
which may miss out on timely information for the hearing impaired. A
combination of AI and sign language can bridge this gap.
It
is also working on combining AI and human experts to make education, workplaces
and digital platforms more accessible to people with disabilities.
