Arbitrary rates at motorway rest areas make the food sour for passengers

The prices of food items at the M2 motorway rest area are extremely high and beyond the reach of common people.

Instead of providing facilities at rest areas, citizens traveling on the motorway are allegedly being robbed through high prices. Complaints have been made that various food items, including cold drinks, are being sold at double and triple rates at the rest area located near Salem Interchange.

Shopkeepers claimed that they acquire shops at high rents, due to which they have to sell goods at high prices. However, the question arises whether it is permissible to transfer this burden directly to passengers?

According to sources, commercial properties in motorway rest areas are given by private companies at high rents, as a result of which shopkeepers increase prices abnormally to earn more profits. Passengers say that the motorway police (130 helpline) and the relevant administration are silent spectators to this situation, and no effective action is being taken against overcharging.

Citizens have demanded that:

·       The official rate list should be implemented immediately at rest areas

·       Strict legal action should be taken against those charging excessive prices

·       An effective complaint system should be activated for passengers

It should be noted that the motorway generates billions of rupees in revenue for the national exchequer annually. Yet, the lack of basic facilities and reasonable prices remains a question mark. The public has demanded that the authorities take immediate notice so that relief can be provided to the passengers and a permanent solution to this problem can be found.
