According to the Pakistan Tanners Association, a total of 7.47 million animals were sacrificed on Eid-ul-Adha this year, which is significantly more than last year.
Last year,
6.977 million 565 animals were sacrificed across the country, while this year
this number has increased to 7.47 million, which can be estimated from the
trend of sacrifice and the increase in activities in livestock markets.
According to
the Pakistan Tanners Association, the animals sacrificed include 2.75 million
cows and bulls, 4.2 million goats, 500,000 sheep and 25,000 camels. Goats
remained the most preferred animal for sacrifice, while the ratio of cow and
bull sacrifices also remained significant.
According to
the association, the prices of hides also stabilized this year. The average
price of cow and bull skins was Rs 2,200, while goat skins were sold for Rs
600, sheep skins for Rs 100 and camel skins for around Rs 2,000.
The report
states that the total value of skins collected during Eid-ul-Adha was around Rs
8.67 billion, which is considered an important economic activity for the
leather industry. Skins are the basic raw material for Pakistan’s leather
industry and the business activities related to their purchase and sale employ
thousands of people.
Industry
circles say that if better care, timely salting and effective delivery of skins
are ensured, the leather industry can be further promoted, which can also
increase the country’s exports.
The large
number of sacrificial animals and billions of rupees worth of skins across the
country on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha reflect the important role that
livestock farming, the leather industry, and related sectors play in Pakistan's
economy.
