Beijing: Two former Chinese defense ministers who were suspended on corruption charges have been sentenced to death.
Wei Fenghe, who was sentenced to death, served as defense
minister from 2018 to March 2023, while Li Shangfu succeeded him as defense
minister but was also dismissed a few months later.
According to Chinese state media, the military court
sentenced both of them to death for bribery, but they were also given a 2-year
reprieve.
The court said that after 2 years, their sentences would be
commuted to life imprisonment and they would not be eligible for parole. The
military’s anti-corruption agency had launched an investigation against both of
them in 2023.
