Lahore: Taking a major step to make the registration system
of madrasas simpler and more effective, the Punjab government has decided to
bring amendments to the Madrasa Registration Act.
According to sources, the government has proposed legal
amendments to relax the condition of separate registration of madrasas under
the Societies Registration Act, under which madrasas registered under the
Federation of Madrasas and other religious boards will not need to be
re-registered in Punjab.
Sources say that a proposal to give legal status to federal
registration of madrasas at the provincial level is also under consideration,
while a plan to link federal and provincial madrasa data has also been
prepared.
According to the proposal, a madrasa that is already
registered in the records of the Federal Registration Authority will not have
to be registered separately in Punjab, which will relieve madrasas from double
registration, additional paperwork and separate verification steps.
According to sources, the proposed amendments have been
prepared after consultation with scholars and madrasa administrators and have
been sent to the provincial cabinet for approval. Punjab Home Department
officials say that the Punjab cabinet will be given a detailed briefing
regarding the amendments to the Societies Act, after which formal approval will
be sought.
