Questions on the alleged smuggling network from Rawalpindi to DI Khan, customs appointments and administrative decisions

Despite the ongoing anti-smuggling operations in the country and government claims, some quarters are alleging that smuggling activities are still going on on some sensitive routes extending to Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Jhelum and DI Khan. According to sources and affected parties, recent appointments and administrative decisions have also raised several questions that require a transparent investigation.

According to sources, various concerns have emerged regarding the impact of the pace of anti-smuggling operations after the appointments and transfers of some Customs Enforcement officers in recent months. Some observers claim that some officers, who allegedly took effective actions against smuggling, were removed from the field and posted to headquarters, while some other officers were given responsibilities for sensitive routes.

In this context, the postings of Inspector Sara and Inspector Shahzeb and subsequent changes in their field duties are also being discussed. According to sources, these officers had allegedly carried out several operations against smuggling, but were later recalled from the field.

On the other hand, the posting of Inspector Imran Arif is also the center of attention. According to sources, he has experience in anti-smuggling operations and has played a role in various seizures, but he was later posted to the Anti-Car Lifting Cell Zone 2. Critics argue that such officers should be posted in areas where their professional skills can prove more effective.

Moreover, questions are being raised regarding the postings of Inspector Christopher Waris and Inspector Ali Abbasi on various sensitive routes. Some sources claim that as a result of these postings, powers on the routes from Peshawar to Jhelum and Rawalpindi to Lahore have been concentrated with specific officers. However, these allegations and claims have not been independently verified yet.

Sources say that after the retirement of Inspector Tariq Mahmood on June 16, 2026, his squad was handed over to Inspector Christopher Waris, as a result of which his responsibilities on Peshawar Road increased further. According to observers, the administrative justification and merit of this decision should be reviewed to eliminate any doubts.

Observers say that if the government and state institutions are serious about eliminating smuggling, then effective monitoring of sensitive routes, officer postings, records of seized goods and anti-smuggling operations must be ensured.

Concerned quarters have demanded that all recent postings, transfers, division of squads, postings on sensitive routes and their administrative justifications be reviewed independently and impartially to ensure that all decisions are made on merit, transparency and in the national interest.
