A major development has come to light in the high-profile case of alleged theft of about 600 kg of silver from the Quetta Customs warehouse. According to sources, former Collector Customs Quetta Karam Elahi has been arrested from Murree, while his protective bail period had also expired.

The incident took place during March and April this year, when 400 kg of real silver was allegedly removed from the silver being transferred from Quetta to Lahore and replaced with fake coins. Two Customs inspectors Arif Jumani and Samiullah Achakzai, were arrested in the initial investigation, but the scope of the investigation was later expanded.

Sources say that based on the evidence uncovered during the investigation, former Collector Karam Elahi and Deputy Collector Hammad were also nominated in the case, both of them were suspended, while now Karam Elahi’s arrest has also been made. It is reported that the main accused have made important revelations during the investigation regarding planning, manufacturing of fake coins and other facilitators.

According to sources, intelligence agencies are also cooperating with the FIA ​​in the investigation of the case, while the investigation by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) is expected to result in more than a dozen more arrests. These include those who allegedly manufactured, transferred or were preparing to buy stolen silver. It has been reported that two Peshawar traders had allegedly arranged to buy silver for Rs 240 million in cash, but they returned after the matter was exposed.

Sources further claim that during Karam Elahi’s tenure, the cases of transfer of valuable vehicles from Quetta, fire in Lakpas warehouse, fire in DI Khan warehouse and other financial irregularities are also being reopened to find out whether there was any correlation in these incidents.

Similarly, the investigation into the role of Hammad and Company in the alleged illegal removal of smuggled hair worth crores of rupees seized from Quetta Customs in March is also being referred to.

According to sources, the arrest took place during the Muharram holidays, which was brought to light after being confirmed by various government and customs sources.

In addition, there is a demand that a separate case of silver theft in Karachi should also be investigated impartially and if any officer has tried to suppress the matter or hide the facts, he should also be brought to justice.
