PTA imposes fine of crores of rupees on mobile companies

 A report by Hamid Chaudhry:

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has imposed a fine of millions of rupees on mobile companies. PTA took action against mobile companies for issuing SIMs on identity cards without the consent of the users and imposed a total fine of Rs 740 million on the four mobile companies.

In its decisions, PTA has held mobile companies responsible for serious irregularities in SIM issuance. Mobile companies have been directed to deposit fines within the stipulated period, while further legal action will be taken if the fines are not paid.

PTA says that the responsibility for franchise violation will also lie with the mobile company, as mobile companies have not effectively monitored franchises and biometric systems. PTA said that illegal SIM issuance can lead to identity theft, cyber fraud and financial crimes.
