The Prime Minister has instructed a three-year independent
audit of customs-bonded warehouses nationwide, to be conducted by a third
party.
On Tuesday, at a review meeting of the Federal Revenue
Board, which he chairs, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that there is no
room for irregularities in customs warehouses and that strict measures must be
taken against officials involved in any wrongdoing or illegal activity, in
accordance with the law.
According to officials, customs trade accounts for 16.5% of
the country's total imports. Following the Prime Minister's instructions, a
physical inventory check will be carried out at customs warehouses across the
country.
While appreciating the recent FBR enforcement operations against
illegal cigarette manufacturing factories in Chakwal and Sawabi, the PM directs
the Chairman FBR to appoint officers with strong reputations and integrity to
sensitive posts and departments.
PM further advised him to complete the Faceless System
rollout by 2027, and the mechanism must be implemented to improve transparency
and minimize direct interaction among taxpayers and FBR officials.
