California: An F-35B Lightning II fighter jet, equipped with
America's latest aviation technology, crashed during a flight in the US state
of California.
The US Marine Corps said in a statement that the single-seat
F-35B crashed moments before landing at the Marine Corps Air Station at
approximately 10 a.m. local time.
According to officials, the pilot ejected from the aircraft
using a parachute during an emergency and was taken to a nearby hospital as a
precaution, where his condition is said to be satisfactory. Rescue and
firefighting teams arrived at the scene immediately after the accident and
extinguished the fire in the wreckage of the aircraft as well as the fire that was
burning in the surrounding dry grass.
The causes of the accident could not be revealed initially;
however, the US military has launched a full investigation into the incident to
determine the exact cause of the accident. It should be noted that the F-35B
Lightning II is one of the world's most advanced stealth fighter jets, which is
capable of taking off from short runways and landing vertically.
The cost of this aircraft is estimated to be around 102
million US dollars, while it is used by the US Marine Corps as well as the
armed forces of the United Kingdom and Italy.
