Lahore: Child labor has become a serious problem in Punjab.
It has been revealed that more than 6 million children are affected by child
labor.
According to sources, a large number of children between the
ages of 5 and 14 are forced to work in Punjab. Funds for the Child Labor Action
Plan 2025 have not yet been released, and the plan to establish rehabilitation
centers is delayed.
Efforts to eliminate child labor have been affected due to a
lack of funds. Children have been forced to work again in the absence of a permanent
solution, due to the limited resources of the Child Protection Bureau; the
focus is only on serious cases.
The Labor Department could not get funds for the three-year
action plan; only 2,000 children could be removed from child labor in a year,
40 percent of the 2,000 children dropped out again, and the plan for
rehabilitation centers in 4 districts is pending.
It is proposed to build centers in Lahore, Rahim Yar Khan,
Sahiwal, and Sargodha. Each center will have a capacity of 200 children and an
area of 2 acres. The funding requested in 2024 has not yet been released.
Rs 1.23 billion was requested for the next financial year.
The department was directed to withdraw the scheme, a family endowment fund is
proposed to eliminate child labor.
DG Labor Punjab has said that child labor courts will be
functional soon, and funds have been sought again for rehabilitation centers.
